American Highway Code US Route US48[III] History
. U.S. Route 48 otherwise Corridor H is part of the Appalachian Development Highway System. It will be an east-west United States highway that runs 148 miles (238 km) from northern Virginia towards central West Virginia and its US 48 designation was commissioned in 2002.
. Prior to 2002, sections east of Moorefield (West Virginia) were celebrated as West Virginia Route 55 as well as Virginia's State Route 55 towards Interstate 81 and sections north of Elkins (West Virginia) as US 219.
. At the present time, West Virginia have not signed US 48 inside its borders. US 48 are among one of the few US route numbers to be used three times for three separate roadways. US 48 originally started out into Northern California in the 1920s, before it is been replaced by US 50, then US 48 was the old name of Interstate 68, before it reached interstate highway status, and now the third use of the route number, it is the future route designation of Corridor H.
. Another interesting fact is that the US 48/US 219 at the same time as running highway designations will also have been used two times when the section of US 48/US 219 is concluded from Parsons to Elkins, WV.
. It was first used on the segment of US 48/US 219 as of Grantsville to Keyser's Ridge, MD. This designation for Corridor H moreover goes against the ordinary practice of putting E-W US highway route numbers in rising order as you move south all the way through the country.
. The very last use of US 48 was between US 40 on the way to the north and US 50 on the way to the south, where the current route is located between US 50 to the north and US 60 to the south.
